The Rules of Baccarat

Learning the rules of Baccarat is one of the easiest things you will learn today. There are only three possible outcomes, and to make it easy for you, we’ve described all the Baccarat rules below.

Card Values

  • An Ace is counted as 1.
  • The cards from 2 through 9 are worth their face values.
  • 10, Jack, Queen, and King are counted as 0.

Hand Values

The value of a hand is the sum of point values of all cards in the hand. Only the last digit of the total is used, so all hands have values in the range of 0 to 9. A hand containing 9, A, A is valued as 1. If the player’s or banker’s hand value is 8 or 9, the hand is declared “natural.”

Bet Types

The player may bet on any of the following:

  • That the banker’s hand wins
  • That the player’s hand wins
  • That the player’s and banker’s hand ties
  • That the player’s hand will be a pair
  • That the banker’s hand will be a pair

Dealing

The player and the banker receive two cards each. Hand values are displayed next to each hand. The cards are dealt in the following order:

  1. Deal to player
  2. Deal to banker
  3. Deal to player
  4. Deal to banker
  5. Deal to player (optional)
  6. Deal to banker (optional

A new set of 6 standard decks of 52 cards is used at the beginning of each round.

The “Natural” hand rule

In the case of a “natural” hand for the player and the banker, both the player and the banker must stand, and no third card is dealt. This rule takes priority over all other rules on card dealing.

The Third Card rule

The player’s rule

If the player’s hand value is 5 or lower, the player is dealt a third card. If it’s 6 or higher, a third card is not dealt.

The banker’s rule

If the player hasn’t been dealt a third card:

  • The banker draws a third card if his hand value is 5 or lower.
  • The banker stands if his hand is 6 or higher.

If the player has been dealt a third card, its value and the banker’s hand value determine whether the banker draws a third card or not:

  • If the bank’s total is 2 or less, then the bank draws a card, regardless of what the player’s third card is.
  • If the bank’s total is 3, the bank draws a third card unless the player’s third card was an 8.
  • If the bank’s total is 4, the bank draws a third card unless the player’s third card was a 0, 1, 8, or 9.
  • If the bank’s total is 5, the bank draws a third card if the player’s card was 4, 5, 6, or 7.
  • If the total is 6, the bank draws a third card if the player’s third card was a 6 or 7.
  • If the bank’s total is 7, then the bank stands.

Results

Bet on a tie

  • If the player’s or dealer’s hands are of the same value (TIE), the bet is paid at 8 to 1, plus the initial TIE bet is returned to the player.
  • If the player’s or banker’s hand wins, the player loses their TIE bet.

Bet on the banker

  • If the player’s and banker’s hands are of equal value (tie result), the player is returned their bet on the BANKER:
  • If the banker’s hand beats the player’s hand, a win of 1 to 1 minus 5% commission is paid, and the player is returned their bet on the BANKER. This, if a player places 1 unit on the BANKER and the banker’s hand wins, the player gets 1.95 units.
  • If the player’s hand beats the banker’s hand, the player loses the bet on the BANKER.

Bet on the player

  • If the player’s and banker’s hands are of equal value, the player is returned their bet on the PLAYER.
  • If the banker’s hand beats the player’s hand, the player loses their bet on the PLAYER.
  • If the player’s hand beats the banker’s hand, a win of 1 to 1 is paid, and the player is returned their bet on the PLAYER. This, if a player has placed 1 unit on the PLAYER and the player’s hand beats the banker’s hand, the player receives 2 units.
